Getting To Know Byredo And Bal d'Afrique

Hello Fragrance Enthusiasts, welcome to the channel Decoris Amora.

Today we’ll be looking at a fragrance from the House of Byredo, Bal d’Afrique.

But first, a little about the House. Byredo is a Swedish company founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham. Gorham has an eclectic heritage with an Indian mother and father that’s part Scottish and part French Canadian as well as being an ex-basketball professional. This eclecticism has translated into the brand itself that produces not only fragrances but candles, leather goods and accessories. In May 2022, the Spanish fashion and fragrance giant Puig  acquired a majority stake in Byredo, putting it on the same platform as other notable brands like Jean Paul Gaultier, Paco Rabanne, Carolina Herrera and Penhaligon’s.

Having now a catalogue of 76 perfumes, the name Byredo is the shortened form of the word By Redolence which  comes from an Old English word meaning a scent that makes you think of something else.

A clear example of redolence is reflected  in the 2009 creation Bal d'Afrique , which was draws inspiration from 1920s Paris and its fascination with African culture, art, and music.

Created by Jérôme Epinette, Bal d’Afrique opens with the combination of floral and citruses made up of Tagetes  or more commonly known as marigold , Amalfi Lemon, Black Currant, Bergamot and African Orange flower.  Its comprises Violet, Cyclamen and Jasmine with a ; base of Vetiver, Musk, Amber and Virginia Cedar.

Bal d’Afrique is a clean, fresh, slightly aromatic and sweet fragrance that feels effortless, bright and happy and easy to fall in love with. .
